First introduced in 1971, the Aria was created to replace the well-established but outdated Piccolina. The car featured an innovative hatchback-type chassis with a large rear door instead of a trunk lid and a modern transmission, where the engine mounted transversely at the front drove the front wheels through an end-mounted gearbox.
With a wide range of powertrains and trim levels, from the basic 1.0-liter Standard model to the sporty 1.5-liter version of the Corse with two camshafts, the car instantly conquered the supermini market. Although it is less well-known today, it has since firmly established its place in the history of the automotive industry as a model for modern superminis and a pioneer of the automotive industry, just like its predecessor.
