In BeamNG, waves on the sea are just a picture. Boats float on a flat surface while the water moves around them. Wave Physics makes the waves you see actually push floating objects, so that boats, logs, barrels, and balls rise on the crests and sink into the troughs along with the water.
What does it do
Wave forces for everything that floats in the game: boat mods, standard logs and barrels, balls, tires. Regular cars are still sinking, just like in the base game.
It has its own water shader, so the visible waves and physics are always synchronized. The boat will not sink into the wave and will not hang in the air above the depression.
Long swells all the way to the horizon, instead of waves that align 15-50 m away from the camera.
Calm water near the shore: waves decrease where the water is shallow, so that large waves no longer climb onto the beach.
The waves rock the ships, but they don't carry them away. Water only moves up and down, and so do forces.
Sea conditions
By default, the maps are what the map creator set, usually light waves.
Calm — small waves, about 0.2 m from crest to trough.
Swell — long rolling waves, about 2 m.
Stormy — stormy sea, up to about 4 m.
Your choice is saved for each sea map. When switching, the old waves fade out, and the new ones appear within a few seconds, so that nothing scatters.
Settings
The Modslab Hub is already included, so Wave Physics gets its own tab (press G). There you can change the state of the sea, the strength of the waves, the water shader, the calm water near the shore and how deep the water should be for full waves, the physics mode, and also turn on or off the entire mod. Without using the hub, the mod simply works with the saved settings.
Cards
It works on any map with a sea. I tested on West Coast USA, Italy, Jungle Rock Island, Small Island and East Coast USA. Lakes, pools, and rivers remain the same.
Useful to know
Light open boats (for example, a kayak weighing 54 kg) feel fine in Calm and Swell conditions, but they can capsize in Stormy conditions.
The game's own water resistance still assumes that the water is standing still, so boats react to the largest waves with a slight delay, and in a storm, a large ship drifts slowly (about 0.4 m/s).
The performance cost is about 0.1% of a single CPU core for a small boat, 0.4% for a 44 m long ferry and 2% for a raft of 14 logs.
Installation
BeamNG.drive 0.39 is required. The Modslab Hub is already included. Unzip the "Wave Physics UNZIP" archive.zip" and place its contents in the mods folder. |
