German Countryside and City Sangerhausen v1.2 (0.39.x)

Sangerhausen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

Welcome to Sangerhausen, a map based on my hometown in central Germany. This is my first map project and my attempt to recreate the main roads and recognizable parts of Sangerhausen in BeamNG.drive as accurately as possible. The map mainly focuses on the city itself and its main roads, including many specific real-world locations, shops, attractions, and other details inspired by their real prototypes. About 99% of the buildings were created specifically for this map, including many small details: signage, speed cameras, graffiti, local bus stops and other custom facilities.

Please note that this was also my first experience mapping for BeamNG. Because of this, some roads and road markings may be incomplete, inaccurate, or simply not look good. AI traffic is also not perfect: some definitions of roads and driving directions are incorrect, and AI cars may behave strangely or drive too fast in some parts of the city. I created the project using the BeamNG MappingTool.

efficiency

Sangerhausen is a very large and demanding map with a huge number of buildings, objects, custom assets and vegetation. Especially in densely built-up areas and when looking towards the city center, you may encounter significant FPS drawdowns. A powerful PC is highly recommended.

Recommended for a better experience:

16 GB of VRAM or more

Powerful processor

Sufficient amount of RAM

SSD is recommended because of the size of the card

The mod itself is also quite large due to the amount of custom content included.

Despite the remaining problems, I decided to release the map after spending a huge amount of time on it, rather than leaving my first mapping project unfinished.

MODDING AND IMPROVEMENTS

If you have experience in mapping for BeamNG and you want to fix, optimize or improve the map, you are welcome. You can also freely use the buildings and other custom assets I created for Sangerhausen in your own projects and maps for BeamNG. You can improve roads, AI traffic, performance, facilities, vegetation, or anything else and release your own improved version. The only condition is that Sangerhausen, its modified versions, and any assets taken from this project must remain completely free. Please do not sell the card or its assets and do not distribute modified or improved versions for paid access.

I have been experiencing serious performance issues since the last update. Shortly before the update, I had already experienced severe FPS drawdowns in many areas of the map, and since then the situation has become even more noticeable. For this reason, I decided to temporarily stop active work on the project. I would really like to add a lot more content and make the map even more realistic and detailed, but with the current performance issues, this is no longer possible for me.

If anyone here is well versed in BeamNG mapping, map building, performance optimization or similar topics and knows how to improve the performance of this map, I would really appreciate any help. I've reached a point where I simply don't have the time or the technical knowledge necessary to optimize the map on my own. That is why I am now specifically seeking help from experienced people who may know where the main performance bottlenecks are and what can be done to improve them. This is also one of the main reasons why I decided to post the project here on the forum. As far as I'm concerned, the project may well be continued, improved, or finalized by other people.

installation

Place the ZIP file in the BeamNG mods folder:
C:\Users \...\AppData\Local\BeamNG\BeamNG.drive\current\mods

If you encounter problems after playing for some time, clear the BeamNG cache and restart the game.

Enjoy exploring Sangerhausen!

Notes on version 1.2:

Use the Vulkan renderer and DirectX 11, otherwise it won't work (run the game with the Vulkan renderer; DirectX settings can be changed on Steam).

The first download can take up to 10 minutes; be patient and don't click on the download screen while it's loading, even if it feels like it's frozen.

If your PC doesn't have enough VRAM and a weak processor, you're likely to run into serious performance issues. I won't be working on performance optimization anymore. I don't know much about LODs, and my buildings don't have collision meshes.

In version 1.2, I made a major optimization: the drawing range was reduced from 25,000 to 600 meters, which significantly improved performance and reduced the severity of severe FPS drawdowns from version 1.0. However, the map is still very demanding, and FPS drawdowns are still noticeable, especially in urban areas. I also redesigned the collisions of several buildings that used to be possible to drive through. Since many of my custom buildings still do not have separate collision meshes or LODs, collisions on some objects, unfortunately, are still not ideal. In some cases, cars can still get stuck in the walls. I have added some new very detailed buildings to give the city its real charm. Overall, version 1.2 is a clear improvement over version 1.0 in terms of stability and performance, although there is still room for further optimization.

By the way:
The strange—looking "Hohe Linde" mountain, locally known as Schachthalde, is an artificial hill approximately 144 meters high. Built from the waste rock of Thomas Munzer's former copper mine, its distinctive conical shape is a notable reminder of the city's mining history.
